Kevin McCarty is an artist and educator with a BFA from the University of Cincinnati (2001) and an MFA in Photography and Media from the California Institute of the Arts (2003). McCarty’s work deals mainly with the representation of subcultures and marginal communities through a mixture of visual modes including documentary photography, staged portraiture, and collage. In the series, I’m Not Like You McCarty’s poignant documentary-style photographs and stunning studio portraits of youths from the Los Angeles Latino punk music scene capture the energy and complexity of a thriving alternative culture. On the street and in the studio McCarty produces images where the subjects occupy the photographs with agency.

McCarty’s work has been exhibited at the Armory Center for the Arts, 18th Street Arts Complex, Rosamund Felsen Gallery, NEWSPACE Gallery, and the LA Freewaves Festival in Los Angeles.  Nationally his work has been shown at the Center On Contemporary Art in Seattle, with solo exhibitions at Artist Space in New York and the Richard E. Peeler Art Center at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana where his work is part of the permanent collection. He has been included in the Los Angeles Times, Village Voice, LA City Beat, Visual Communications Quarterly, and an essay exploring his work by theorist José Esteban Muñoz appears in Cruising Utopia, The Then and There Of Queer Futurity, “Stages; Queers, Punks, and the Utopian Performative,” (NYU Press, 2009).

As an educator, McCarty has taught and lectured at California State University Fullerton, the University of California at Irvine, University Of Southern California Roski School Of Art, New York University, and the Director’s Guild of America.
